Dislocations of the main shoulder joint most commonly occur when the arm and hand is forced beyond its normal range, usually up above the head with the elbow out to the side. This is a relatively common injury for Rugby players and those involved in winter sports, but can affect anyone. The diagnosis is usually confirmed using an MRI scan and then a decision can be made about whether surgical intervention is needed, or not.
These injuries usually occur when people fall and come to a sudden stop (eg: off a bike, or ladder). The injury is graded from 1 (sprain) to 5 (complete dislocation and ligament tears). All grades are painful, and the correct diagnosis can mean the right treatment can be initiated to get you back to activity as soon as possible.
